Supporting equality, diversity & inclusion

We are an employee-owned, independent, geographically diverse, talented company able to forge our own vibrant future.

We aim to be a company where the best global talent wants to work and can contribute, develop and succeed.

This means that EDI is vitally important to us. Being more representative means, we are better able to serve our clients and the communities in which we operate, bringing a wider range of experiences and views to our work.  We are committed to providing equality of opportunity and reward for all our employees, so we must safeguard a culture that ensures equality, diversity and inclusivity.

Measuring our EDI goals

To measure our EDI performance, we use the UK Equalities Act 2010 framework. This framework covers nine ‘protected characteristics’ – age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage & civil partnership, sexual orientation, pregnancy & maternity, race, religion & belief and gender.

To further ensure progress, we measure ourselves in all our geographies against available benchmarks for:

  • the private sector (specifically professional services);
  • our industry; and
  • our communities.

Steer is committed to ensuring that we provide equality of opportunity and reward for all our employees and that we safeguard a culture that ensures equality, diversity and inclusivity. This means facilitating an environment where all individuals are presented with the same opportunities at Steer.

Awards & memberships

We actively encourage employees to join the Women in Transportation Society International dedicated to creating a diverse, inclusive and equitable transportation industry, globally.

As members of The Employers Network for Equality & Inclusion, we have won several awards including ‘Winner’ of their Innovative Ways of Working award and ‘Highly Commended’ for our Agile Working in the UK. Plus, we have achieved Gold Award status in their Talent Inclusion & Diversity Evaluation benchmarking platform.

We are a proud supporter of the UK Mayor of London’s Diversity in Transport pledge that breaks barriers for young people from minority ethnic groups starting sustainable careers.

We are also signatories of the Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Charter launched by The Railway Industry Association and Women in Rail. The Charter is open to all companies, clients and organisations working in the UK railway industry who wish to play a role in promoting positive change in the sector.

We actively participate in the UK’s Women in Transport group focused on balancing the gap  of 47% of women in the UK workforce, but only 20% in transport. Along with corporately sponsoring its mentoring programme, some of our employees are active mentors.

Furthermore, our Modern Slavery Policy Statement reflects our commitment to acting ethically and with integrity in all our business relationships.
