England 2015, UK

Our award-winning trip planner for the 2015 Rugby World Cup

Steer developed this award-winning multi-venue, event based trip planner to support the Rugby World Cup Travel Demand Management (TDM) strategy.

We started the project with an extensive user mapping exercise to ensure that the site was tailored to meet user needs translated to task-flows and scenarios, we wire framed the screens and created a prototype to present for client sign off. Regular communications with the England 2015 client and close working between our creative and programming teams ensured that the tight build schedule was met including two rounds of user testing.

Event specific data was incorporated into the trip planner database and was blended with other open source data sets to create the routing engine. Data sets included public transport, road closures, dedicated walking routes and parking locations, fanzines and venue-specific transport services including park and ride and shuttle bus services. The trip planner supported user personalization and push messaging so spectators could be proactively informed of known delays or issues on their planned route.

This was the most frequently used trip-planning tool during the Rugby World Cup with around 500,000 users generating 600,000 journey plans. Surveys conducted by England Rugby 2015 after each match showed how 90% of the users consistently rated the journey planner as being useful, very useful or extremely useful.

Our efforts were recognised at the London Transport Awards 2016, where the journey planner won the Excellence in Travel Information and Marketing prize.
